Question of the week – organising your children

Sunday, March 6th, 2011

I’m going to be doing a talk later this month on organising for children.

What are your biggest challenges in this area?

I’ll also be hosting a free teleseminar and I’ll share the 5 most common areas, so have at it – let loose with your frustrations, concerns, challenges or where you’d just like some ideas.

P.S. I thought I’d show you my minimalist children. When we get to them in the mornings, their beds have nothing but the sheet and maybe a book.

Connor started this trend and I see he’s taught his sister well :)

Declutter your children’s toys now

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Now is the perfect time to declutter your children’s toys, just before Christmas.

You know how you get overwhelmed with too much stuff?

Your kids also get overwhelmed with too many toys.

Your kids have too many toys if…
1. There is not enough space in their rooms to store it. No, the answer is not to move to a bigger house or to buy more containers.
2. They don’t even notice when you remove some toys.
3. They forget the toys they do have because they’re buried so deep.

Now, here’s what I want you to do:

1. Sit down with your child and explain that there are other little girls and boys who don’t have any toys.
2. Ask them to choose some toys to give to those kids.
3. Warning – your children will probably pick things that YOU’d like to keep. Restrain yourself from putting those back in the toybox!
4. Make sure they’re in good working order and drop them off at your nearest orphanage or shelter.

Now you’ve made some space for the inevitable – more toys at Christmas!

I picked up a great tip when I was working with a client a few months ago.

She told me that whenever the kids have birthdays and they are inundated with toys, she lets them pick their 3 favourites and hides the rest away.

Every so often she’ll magically produce one of the new toys and the child is enthralled for a couple of weeks. In fact, this is exactly what she did so that her little darling would leave us in peace to organise her office!

If all else fails, do what my client did and hide their toys away.

Ask the organiser – 7 ideas to organise art projects

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

I received a question from someone who says.

I need help!!! How can I organize my 5 year old daughter’s art projects?!?!

Start by teaching your child valuable organising skills from an early age that will stand them in good stead later in life. A two-year-old can do basic organising like throwing all their dolls into a basket (categorising).

It’s important to realise that quantity does not equal quality! Sit with her, go through the projects and let her decide on her favourites. This helps the child to prioritise and learn.

A word of caution – make it easy for your child. There is no point in setting up a complicated system that will be difficult to use and maintain.

Actual organising of the projects

  1. Have a folder for each year of school. Your child can choose what she wants to keep and the rest can go.
  2. Scan the projects and burn to CD.
  3. Take a picture of your child with the projects.
  4. Use artwork to wrap gifts for family and friends. WIth children going to parties all the time, you’ll be sure to get through all that extra artwork in no time.
  5. Fold into an envelope and post to distant relatives. They will love getting mail and your child will love the idea of sending a letter.
  6. Laminate favourites and use them as placemats.
  7. Have a treasure/ memory box. When the box is full, it’s time to go through it and declutter.

Anybody else have some bright ideas?
